Had it in a few places growing up in TN and Kentucky/
Mildly peppery, mild acid, a little sweet, no tomato (I think), jet black and a little thick. I found a recipe associated with Moonlight BBQ (the mutton place in Owensboro) and that wasn't it, and I tried winging it (molasses soy Worcestershire,) EPIC FAIL:tsk:

What do you know?

Here's a recipe I picked up several years ago when I was looking for regional recipes of BBQ Sauces. I recall it being pretty good, but it has been years since I made it.

I am probably not familiar enough with that style of BBQ to properly judge if this is as good as what people expect, and frankly I've never tried Moonlite BBQ Sauce to compare it to either. But here it is.

2 ts Vegetable oil
1/4 c Minced onion
1/4 c Plus 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
1/3 c Plus 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
2 tb Plus 1 teaspoon light brown sugar
2 ts Lemon juice
1/4 ts Ground black pepper
1/4 ts Tabasco sauce
A scant 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
A scant 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 ts Coarse salt

Heat the vegetable oil over moderate heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until onion is soft and light golden brown.

Add the remaining ingredient, and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. (The sauce will thicken slightly.)

Makes about 1 Cup

Just had a thought...would Pickapeppa sauce work?

it "leans that way" flavorwise, not quite as hot or sweet.
I am baffled but I might try the recipe, its a bit different.

Try googling "Black Jack BBQ sauce".
I need to find that recipe too.
It was made with black coffee. Had a great flavor.
If I can find it somewhere, I'll post it here.

I found this
Yes, this barbecue sauce actually calls for coffee. The coffee helps to give the sauce a unique flavor which works particularly well on beef, but you just might find yourself putting this sauce on most anything.
Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chopped onions
  • 1 cup strong black coffee
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup hot chili peppers, minced
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and simmer for about half an hour. Let cool. Pour into a blender and puree until smooth. Store in a glass container in the refrigerator.

Try this, from a decent and well known Q book (am I allowed to credit it in here? No copyright issues?)

Owensboro Black Sauce

1 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons black pepper

Cook it up for 10 minutes.

This book also has the Moonlite recipe in it so you may have already seen this one and rejected it. It looks like it would be a pretty thin sauce as well, but if the taste is right who cares?

Sounds closer thanks. I did look there but I missed that one, I will try.
Wish I could describe this stuff better.
