Default Tabletop New Braunfels smoker / grill

Recieved this never used smoker/ grill, hoping someone can answer a few questions for me, is the curved piece of steel designed to cover the coals as a baffel or is it to act as a heatshield to protect the bottom? By the weight of it around 40lbs or so, I believe it was made in Texas before company was sold. Thing is a tank. Haven't seen any pics on line of it. Found the instruction manual of the Charbroil version which doesn't include the curved piece of steel, but is a bit different, pretty small to put coals on vent/ intake side and meat on other end. Any one have one of these? Thanks
