BQ Grills Recommendations

Looks like a good option. I did not see pricing, but I may be overlooking it.

I have a chance to get one pretty cheap. They look nice, but I’ve never heard of them and hoped to get some info from an owner of one.

While not the cabinet smokers I have seen their whole hog cookers used by Sam Jones BBQ in Winterville, NC. BQ Grills makes some very high quality cookers that have a ton of longevity. Sam Jones is running his entire whole hog BBQ restaurant using their cookers, and he also has a gooseneck trailer with 8 of the BQ cookers which he travels with across the country.

Here's a backend pick of the trailer at a festival in New York.

I also got a unique opportunity to cook a hog with Sam Jones at the NBBQA conference a few years ago. He had a single BQ grill built on a trailer and that's what he cooked on and that cooker was very solid.

Again, I can't speak about their cabinet style smokers, but they certainly do build a solid product and you'll definitely be satisfied with their equipment.

No experience. But I have known about them for 4 or 5 years and if I was getting a vertical, charcoal smoker, IMnotalwaysHO, that would be the way to go. It is direct from the bottom instead of the reverse flow type.

I’ve got two medium BQ VD smokers mounted to a trailer (which they also built for me) that I use for bbq competitions. Workmanship is outstanding on both smokers and the trailer. Great guys to work with as well. Below is an initial review that I did on them (hope the link works). I’ve cooked a ton on them and wouldn’t go to any other smoker. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Great review. Thanks for all the info. I can’t wait to cook on mine.

Have you filled one up yet? What is capacity like?

I have done a bunch of cooks for large parties of 200+ on the two of them. 16 butts at once (8 on each smoker), 20 racks of baby backs on a single smoker laying flat on 4 racks, 30lbs of wings on a single smoker. Never filled one with briskets before. They do a good job with large amounts of meat but because it is a vertical direct smoker you will need to rotate shelves a couple of times during the cook. If you want to talk about how to run it, temp control, tips/tricks, etc, let me know and I will give you my number to talk through it.
