Some of you seem to have better luck with them. I'm using mine with my plain ole kettle at the moment. Any tricks to keep the probes workin well?

Don't pinch the wires. I found it best to drill a hole and use a grommet to protect the wires as they go into the cooker and not pinch them in the lip.

Good luck...

Definitely be *very* careful with the wires, and do not submerge the probes in water past where the wire enters. Some have added a length of shrink wrap to the wire-probe joint. On my kettle, I removed a bit of metal in one spot on the edge of the lid so the wires do not get pinched.

Make sure the probes are fully seated in their respective recepticles.

That way, you won't have the wonky HHH readings.

Be careful with the screws on the back of the battery compartment on the receiver. They are microscopic and can strip out very easily. I wish they had used better screws!

i clean probes with 409 and a papertowel then a very quick rinse and dry. they can short out so be careful getting them too wet.

mine shoud be here tomorrow

I am going to use heat shrink tube that is lined with waterproof glue on them.

that stuff works great for sealing wires

Are you adding the waterproof glue or did the tube come with the glue in it? If you are adding glue, what kind did you use?

the tubing comes lined with waterproof glue. When you heat it up, the glue melts and oozes out both ends of the tube

I'd be careful with the heat shrink tubing. I tried that and ended up with a gooey mess. It lasted maybe 2 cooks and then started to break down and melt.

thats a good point. the stuff in my link is not high temp rated.

the stuff I used is, I work in a lab and we do high temp durability testing, I really dont know where the stuff comes from. I just grab it out of a cabinet. We use it in heat chambers

I have a Maverick ET-732.

I dropped the receiver twice and the transmitter once. I got the receiver wet once. They still worked fine, not a problem.

I have a probe grommet and never got either of the probes wet.

My pit probe went bad after about 10 cooks and I had to buy another one.

I too put the grommets in my WSM and try to keep the probes from getting kinked. I do not roll my probes up after use - I hang them over a peg and that way I dont have to unroll them every time I cook. The rolling and unrolling was the most aggravating thing for me. Also, as stated above, make sure the probe is seated well in the unit.

You can use threaded lamp parts for the grommet. That's what used on my performer. Works well and is cheap.

I got my heat shrink tubing from the local Radio Shack, and have not had any problems with them. I put the tubing about 1 inch on the probe, and then about 4 inches up on the braid. Heated it with the wife's hair dryer. Works great on my drum (thru a grommet hole) and in my gas stove in the kitchen. (has rubber gasket around the oven door) Still has the original tubing on it from about a year ago. Great product. (ET-732)

Blessings,

Omar
