Black's - Another Lockhart BBQ. Damn. In Lockhart, BBQ joints are like Starbucks in NYC - there's one on every corner.

Those pix remind me of about ten little Texas towns.
Looks like you had a great time, Brooklyn!

Been there too. That's all mesquite wood at Smitty's. My parents live close by in Kingsland.

Close by in Texas terms :D 90 minutes if they get lucky with traffic?

Didn't know Smitty's went with Mesquite. Most folks around Lockhart burn Oak.

Really? Didn't smell like it. Couldn't really taste it either.

Last time I looked it was mesquite; but that was 10 years ago.

You sure you aren't thinking about Cooper's in Llano? Kreuz didn't move to their new building until '99, and that's when Smitty's opened up in the same building. I know Cooper's burns their mesquite and cooks over the coals and that's a lot closer to Kingsland.

Maybe. Dementia sucks.

Threesticks welcome to the group.

How did you like the sauce at Kreuz's?

Saw a special on Smittys/Kreuz last year. Kreuz was where Smitty's is now and there was some family problems. If I remember right, one part of the family actually had the rights to the restaurant and the other owned the building. Anyway, the guys running the restaurant left, built a new building and the building owners went into the bbq business.

Go in and ask for sauce 8) It's bad enough that they sell beans now!

The boys, Rick and Don (IIRC) had the business, their sister had the building. they couldn't come to terms so the brothers took the business down the road. It lost a little something; mostly in consistency and the feel of the old building. When they moved, one bucket of coals from the old pits were carried down HWY 183 with police escort to the new pit.

Robert - I missed these photos and of Lubling the first time around. Thanks for posting them. Reminds me of when I was in Greenville 18 months ago. TX BBQ joints rule.

I hear you TK. Thanks for ressurecting the post, cuz I didnt see this either.

Good pics Rob. Nice wood pile.

Did you ask them for a tour of the cooking pits?

The pits are out in the open, you walk up to them an order. They're basically low concrete block tubs about 42" high, with a cooking grate about 18" down into it. They're covered with metal doors that open to reveal the food. There's a log burning fire sitting out on the floor on one end. Ii almost walked into it at Smitty's.

I have no idea how ventilation is provided. I think the whole room must have it's own chimney. The pits are kept in seperate rooms from the rest of the restaurant. The rooms are dark and smokey. It's a real religious experience going into them.
