I was at the KCBS judging class and the moderator mentioned that cooks are turning in wings and doing well. I tried some, but didn't box them. A simple rub, a little apple wood, and three hours at 225-250.
They went over well.
Does anyone really turn-in wings?

Those look great. I hear of wings being turned in on occassion but haven't seen a trend in doing so yet.

Those look great, Chipper!

I'm going to move this over to the competition side of the house.

I really want to try wings at a comp. The best chicken I ever had was when I smoked jumbo wings. I should try them, but judges seem on a regular to look and stay in the box. This might be a little too CRAZY for them.

I really wish a guy can turn in wings and not be afraid of being judged in a biased manner.

I got some good wings i'd like to turn in !!!..

Go for it. I believe most use thighs because it is easier to keep them juicy and not dry

Depending on the region were in, we will turn in wings. In Iowa they have placed as high as third (first comp ever) and in Kansas 2nd place...but the closer you get to KC the less tolerant of anything but thighs they become

DH got some wings at a contest this summer, he was fine with it, though they weren't as big & meaty looking as those in these pics. But he noticed other judges at his table being leery.

Maybe if more people entered them, they'd become more accepted.

Those look great! I'd eat 'em up... and probably score them very well too, depending on taste/texture... you know the drill.

we've turned in wings and done really well (first place), but we've also done really crappy(DAL). you just never know. as much as you hear how judges are bored with thighs, they don't seem to want to score anything else very high on a consistent basis.
I say try 'em... see how they fare.

I think some on here do drums... and do well with them if I remember right.

does anyone ever turn breasts? I cook lots of chicken during summer months, maybe 1000 lbs. my breasts are very moist and tasty. just think if it was good it might stand out.

we did last year, lots of flavor, tender, moist. we pulled them and they didnt do really well.

Thighs just look like too much work to me. I may start cooking drumsticks at home to see how good I can get them.

I've seen wings, drumsticks, sliced breast and pulled chicken in turn-in boxes. Any can win, but I think most cooks go for the thighs because they are consistent from bird to bird and most forgiving to cook.

I love a good wing though, and as a judge would be very happy to see some nice plump drumettes in a box.

I agree. We turned in some wings a few years ago. They looked good and tasted great, but the judges did not like them. We have also tried chicken halves and thighs. Thighs always seem to do best...

I believe that wings took 1st place at Mays Landing, NJ this year ( 5/08 ). He was handing them out Friday night to the other cooks and they were really good. He cooked them hot and fast.
