Enough coals?

Started my 18 WSM with a full barrel of unlit K coal and 20 lit K coals. Taking a LONG time to get the temps up. Is 20 lit coals for minion on WSM enough?
 
If my charcoal ring is stacked to the top and I have 20 or so lit coals on top, my temps just shoot right up. Even though I use lump, I would think that your temps should ramp quickly. Do you have a lot of cold meat or a water pan full of cold water or something?

My 18 WSM get hot fast with a load like that. No water pan.
 
I use 1/2 to 3/4 of a chimney with mine. Never any problems with temps up quick. Any chance your unlit is damp?
 
The waterpan is full with cold water from the hose. Don't think unlit was damp. Stuff used in the chimney was from the same bag and lit right up.

That's probably your issue. Takes quite a bit of energy to heat up a gallon of cold water. Next time try filling it with the hottest tap water, or you could look into other mods such as the sand mod or clay saucer mod.
 
it's gonna take some time with the cold water but it will get there.. keep the vents open wide for now.

When I had my WSM's, I used to have the water pan in lined with foil but no liquids..

+1 on the sand mod. Works great! Holds heat, no evaporation, and difuses the heat too.
 
Like others have mentioned, you should start with hot water in the water pan.
 
Full ring of charcoal, no water in water pan, 8 lit briquettes and I can have mine to temp in 35 minutes...

I like to take it up real slow and stead. I can hit 235 dead on without to much trouble.

In my opinion, lose the water in the water pan and use a clay planter base, much easier to control temps that way.
 
Use hot water or sand in the pan. Sand instead of water povides good "heat sink" action like water but can get up to temp a little quicker. Water takes a long time to change temps. Cold water can take a long time to come up to temp. Water boils at 212 F (at sea level). If you are cooking at 225 F, it will take a long time to get the water up to 212 F.

Never thought of that, great idea....The water pan can be a PITA to clean, would be nice to eliminate it. So I assume you are of the opinion that the water does not bring anything substantial to the party.

This is exactly what I do. Once I started using the clay pot base I never wanted to deal with water again.
 
The water pan shouldn't be a PITA to clean if you have lined it with foil. Personally I line my pan with foil, then put four balls of crumpled up foil (about the size of a ping pong ball) in, and then 2 layers of foil, and never have to worry about water.

to the guys that use water, where do you dump/clean the pan?
if you do it on the lawn, it kills the grass.:tsk:
if you do it on the driveway it leaves a stain(since may, i got one!:icon_blush:)
can't even THINK about bringing that thing in the house:boxing:
