Congrats Mike! I expect to see Victor, that 100lb pig as a hood ornament on your car for the next 52 weeks. :)

I really like Troy.. one of my favorite venues.. hang out next to the river and have a brick oven arugula and prosciutto pizza.. lookk forward to that allyear.. :)

I'll share my woulda shoulda.... going in to awards, we werent happy with out big cuts, but chicken and ribs were 'ok', but not good enough to stand up in that field. We didnt expect much(well, at least I didnt)... then we hear our name..several times?? Surprise!.. we got 4 in chicken, 6th in ribs, 7th in pork...thats 3 top 10 calls. So we waited for brisket(my strongest category) and if comes top 10, and it usually does, we figure we had a shot at a top 3 finish.

what was the first messed up issue behind the scenes..... is our pork was WRECKED... ruined.. blech.. gag.. yuk.. there was nearly NO useable meat on 2 butts.. it was all gray or dark brown.. no pink meat, everything on the butts had this weird texture and color that none of us have ever seen. I scaanvanged thru looking for SOMETHING to put in the box.. and decided to just slice the 'horn'.. then we took those stringy strands that are immediately under the fat cap and pretended to make 'pulled' pork. We then did a hail mary and doused it with some frankenstei sauce from TR, BH, HC, and god knows that else... The rest of the pork was destined for the trash.. it would be an embarrassment to even give it to the scavengers mulling around looking for handouts.

Well..... during awards, i reduced to reading email when they were calling pork... just hoping for a DQ to happen somewhere so I was not DAL. and poof... 7th place pork. WTF was that?

then comes brisket..

presentation was top notch.. usually gets excellent scores... great box... about 12-15 nice slices, and 10 cubes... flat was not quite perfect, but definitely had good flavor, texture was firm, but tender. So we were hoping for top 10...

nothing.. no call...

get score sheets...
788 566 866 677 866 666

27th out of 32... ohhh stop.... inedible pork gets 7th place.. and a good but not great brisket gets 27th? WTF??

well all the judges were consistent.. so i cant fault them.... so something went south with the brisket... all i can think if is I sliced a little thicker than usual and it was 'tuff' to them, probably going against a field scattered with awagu now... i gave some brisket to one of the judges after the contest and he said '8-9'... showed him pics of the box.. 'definite 9'

that brisket put us 13th overall..:cry:

looking at a glance.. If brisket scored top 6, we could have made RGC.. im going to calculate it later when im not as bummed out.. oh well.. chit happens..

justgoes to show.... on any given day.. its all up to the judges.

Pffft excuses excuses, I can certify that is has nothing to do wit a field scattered with waygu :becky:

Congrats to mike and Kris on gc
Smo'q damn, u said u were bringing it this weekend and you did!
I wish I had a camera for the look on matts face when he was called for overall. Congrats to everybody else that walked.

Elizabeth and her crew do a fantastic job with this contest. A dozen of us went to dinner fri night to yannis, it was over the top. Most of all I go to this event for the arugula pizza :-D

thanks sled.

and i think i'm bringing it to manorville too. if phil will let me in now.:wink:

my pork was off in color as well as well. not sure why. but, the SOW was delicious.

brisket flat was terrible. simply terrible. except for the BE's. i ALMOST just put a block of those cubed up in the box.

congrats to all who walked and thank you to all the brethren that helped me along the way!

nah.. no excuses.. the judges were consistent in the scores.. so something was up with it... but i must have eaten 6 slices of it last night... little piece by little piece.. stretching, tugging, chomping..... trying to figure out WTF is wrong with it. The stretch test could have been what killed me since it was sliced on the thick side.. dont know why I did it.. it wasnt crumbly or anything, but i sliced thick.. think thats what bit me.

gotta say.. the contest is top notch.. so many vendors to get non-bbq munchies.... i lived on pizza and home made ice cream. well run... im always going back to that one. :)

Congrats to Lakeside, S'mo Q, and all who walked. Boogie, glad to see all that hard work you have been putting in paid off.

note to self......put Mike on short list of people to get very drunk the night before turn-ins!!!

Nice job buddy, brother! I'll have to put up with Victor in Red Sox gear for at least another year

Thanks everyone! Congrats to S'mo Q and Jacked Up! And all who walked.

This has been one of my favorite for years now. Downtown Troy is very unique and I love it! Being in walking distance of a hotel, farmers market, restaurants and bars is awesome! I look forward to it every year...and that wood fired pizza too!

First timers perspective

Had a blast in troy. General Joe's BBQ was 4 guys, all of which were competing for the first time ever. We were lucky to be located right next to Black Caddy BBQ and even received some great advice from the poobah. We were thrilled to take 2nd in the people's choice ribs (admittedly we're local so we had a home field advantage, but not THAT big of an advantage). Then Sunday felt more like we should have been called General Custar's BBQ. Ughh, what a punch in the gut when we got our scores. We were planning on going to the Hudson Valley Ribfest but now I'm not sure if well be a one and done team when it comes to KCBS...although, reading this string is helping talk me down off the ledge.

Pig out was my first comp last year and i felt most the same way. But I have since taken some walks to include 1st place ribs :) there is no other feeling that can describe the way i felt about that. contest after first place was 97th place! keep plugging along we all help each other

It was nice to see old friends and meet new ones. We did not compete this year but came as spectators on Sunday. Congrats mike, if you rember correctly I told you "ya nailed that brisket" Great job Skip and julie!
