New offset build started ( With Pics)

Northern, the lid is heavy and I plan on a counter weight, but haven't added it yet. Crossczek has a bigger pit than mine, and I believe if I remember right it is .375. His doors are HEAVY, but he has torsion spring hinges that help. You might send him a PM as I'm sure he would help you with getting some springs if you need them. I can't remember for sure where he got them, but I'm fairly certain it was someplace in Toledo OH.

Hi Northern,
The torsions springs were custome made by a local steel fab company.

The one door on mine that poses the biggest problem is the four footer - yes, it is HEAVY, even with the torsion spring hinges. But, the two footer isn't that bad, but it too has the torsion spring hinges so I don't know what it's like without them.
Definitly, go with the counter weight - they will be heavier than you think, especially when you consider your arms not used to lifting that much weight in that fashion.
And, be sure to weld the straps to the door before you complete the cut, it will make sure that the door won't "spring" and not fit back into the same hole from which it was cut.
Good luck. If you have any more questions feel free to PM me.
Scott

Sorry, I still haven't finished it. Life has been getting in the way of my pit building. I still have to buy some tube for the stacks, a new piece for the tongue, finish up the racks for the upright, and build a woodbox and storage box. Hopefully I'll be able to get started on it again soon.

great start keep going

Looks like a good start. How do you intend to hinge the door? I helped a friend change the doors on his big smoker. He had them hinged on top and they just got too heavy. We had oversized door plates rolled to the same radius as the shell and then I designed hinges that allowed them to swing with out binding. They seal very well and are nothing to open. They also stay where you put them when you open them. Here are the finished doors.

Well, I have finally made a bit more progress, and am planning on doing a seasoning smoke tomorrow morning even though it's not done yet. I am cooking for my neighbor tomorrow and would like to use it. I ran out of MIG wire last night, and tonight I ran out of 1x1 angle, so will have to pick up a piece in the morning to reinforce the firebox grate. I stopped by the steel supplier today and picked up a 2x3x1/4 piece 6ft long to replace the tongue that has twisted from years of having a wheel dolly on one side of it. I have to get this thing road worthy, plated and ready for action by labor day as it's needed for a bigger cook. I've attached a few pictures, I'll get some better ones tomorrow as it was getting dark tonight.

Looking like its coming together really nice!!!

Cheers

MAN that's nice. Looks like it's taken you a bit to pull this thing together, but now you're ready to SEASON!!:clap2:

Hey, got a quick question on your baffle: Looks like you've got a solid baffle, ilo tuning plates, right? Perhaps I didn't look closely enough, but are there holes in the baffle for the smoke to enter the cook chamber? Are you waiting on that until the last? Just didn't see anything.

LOOKS FAN-FARKIN-TASTIC MAN!!!!:thumb:

Lemme guess.........banana yellow? Bright orange?

Here it is, her first fire, almost brought tears to my eyes. This was at about 9 this morning, been running at close to 400 letting all the nasties burn out. Seasoned with vegetable oil, and the ribs will go on in the next 10-15 minutes. I have the chicken in the fridge in a bucket o brine. This has a nice air flow through it been chugging along using about a split every 1 - 1.5 hours. I'm a happy man today :-D

I want one please! Good job bro can't wait to see the pron on the ribs and chicken. Have fun and get it dirty!

Pron from today. Looks really good, smelled really good, but after being out in the heat I just wasn't hungry . Since it was for my neighbors party I wasn't that upset, it looks like they are enjoying it.

Building a pit of that caliber is hard work, but when you finish and have food on it like that it makes it all worth it. You will have lots of fun with it for sure.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! Here are a few pictures of it all painted up. I still have plans to add a wood rack on the side, and a storage box in front, but had to get it ready to cook for my mom for her annual labor day party. Excuse the temporary lights, I didn't want to weld something on only to have to remove it later. Tomorrow will be it's first road trip!

EDIT: Forgot to add, cooking 20 racks of ribs (BB), 70-80 Moinks, and 20-30 cloinks tomorrow. I may have to come back and grab the drum!
