i have to ask...are 8' (?) chain link fences topped with barbed/razor wire the norm in jamaica?

nice looking build by the way, should be a real sweet unit when you are done.

Got the "scrap steel" for the firebox today basically free. (food payment) :thumb: It's 5 sheets, 20" x 48" & 1/4" thick, it has a raised diamond pattern & a slight bit of rust on it but nothing structurally wrong... oh did I mention it was free??? Hopefully I can start cutting the firebox pieces out of it tomorrow and assemble over the weekend. Figured I'd make the FB 20"W x 24"D x 24"H. Any thoughts?

Great looking rig..

I have to say.. your doing a good job.. I was looking at the inside edge of the doors.. did you also weld the inside edge.. and if you did.. is it causing you a fit issue with the extra metal inside..

Nice job with the cut off wheel grinder.. makes a great cutting tool..

That thing is really coming along Phrasty. You're going to be done in no time. As an aside, how much do you love your angle grinder? I affectionately refer to mine as The DeWalt. Every time I do any kind of fabrication it figures prominently.

Great looking build.

If you have time, could you please post some close-up pics of your grate slides? I'm getting ready to start a horizontal cooker and cant seem to get my brain wrapped around a good design for grates that slide out,,,but not fall out.

No problem bredrin... Here's what I have on the slides... Very Straight forward. Welded the slides flush with the opening of the doors then attached a piece of angle iron to the top of the slide to hold down the rack. It however does not have a stop for taking out the tray completely, I want to have that option.

Time for another update here... Haven't worked on the smoker for the past 2 days due to work, so I tried to get some work done on it today...

•Did a bit of touch up welding to the doors and the rack slides as well that tested out the food grate hold down tab. (in the previous post)

• Attached the legs back to the smoker (they were taken off in order to flip the tank upside-down)

• Smoked 2 home-made sausages and had oversized hotdogs for lunch! :biggrin1:

• Cut out the pieces for the firebox out of the 1/4" scrap I got yesterday.

• Started cutting a couple pieces for the FB baffle

• then finally I started to lay out the handles.

Still have a bit more work to do but its definitely coming along... Gonna try tack the firebox together tomorrow, layout the door and all that fun stuff! BTW... I'm getting the hang of the cutting torch! Definitely helping the project along... I don't know how far I would have gotten and on how many blades with just my trusty 4.5 angle grinder!! The torch is a real time saver!!! :thumb: Anyways, here are the pics of todays activities.

Hey Denis, no. I did not weld the inside seams. I tacked the corners but I take the welds down flat with the grinder so they wouldn't bump when I close the doors.

AND SHE CAN BREATH...... well almost! Got the exhaust on today. Man what a custom fit.. lol Had some 4" pipe and I doubled them up for a beefy look, also I want to be able to hit the higher temps. I figure thay can always be choked down if needed. I didn't wanted to intrude on the cooking space (I might curved racks in the corners to add more cooking space) so I had them come off the side, but when I got the 4" elbows, they extended the pipes too far out from the side of the tank, therefor I decided to cut them down to fit in a bit closer. Had to choose to do it the hard way! :frusty: At least I think it looks better closer in. After all... thats what matters right? :crazy:

How much clearance do you have between the upper and lower racks? And how much between the upper rack and the top of the cooking chamber? I'm just curious if this size tank will work for my build or if I need to start with a 250.

No problem... The clearance between the racks and the grill is about 6" Its a very nice size. If you are catering full time you would probably need a 250 gal. But otherwise this still is a decent sized tank.
