Harpoon N.E. Championship

From Harpoon:

"Greetings from Harpoon! After reviewing everybody’s application, we have selected Ma’s Que Crew to participate in the 2010 Harpoon Championships of New England Barbecue."

You apply, you fill out paperwork, you write a couple of essays, they decide it they're going to allow you to come...would "acceptance" be better?

Nah, acceptance or invitational. It's all the same thing. The organizer gets to choose who they want to compete in their contest. No different than the Jack. for some reason, I had thought they got rid of having teams do a popularity contest.

From what I hear it's a great comp. A little too political and involved for me. I would love to attend and check it out, but would probably never go through the hassle of getting INVITED! Too many other good comps around the time.

"Good Afternoon.

Thanks for your interest in the Harpoon Championships of New England Barbecue. I regret to inform you that after reviewing all of the applications, your team was not selected for this year’s competition. However, just let me know, and I can add your team to the waitlist, in case any of our selected teams back out.

Cheers,
Mike "

I've been to it Matt. It's the gem of the Northeast. Fortunately when I was there, we could still swim in the river... :clap2:

But I am just not sure how you define invitational? This doesn't just relate to Harpoon. I believe Wildwood used to do the same thing? If it was fair, they would open it up and when it was full, it was full. No matter what part of the country or whether or not you can write a good essay.

Harpoon was on my list of contests I wanted to experience, and MilitantSquatter gave me that opportunity several years ago.

It's well run! Cook friendly! Great turnout and appreciation from the public! Fantastic grounds for the event!

How often does a contest give you three cases of beer, and beer tickets for the fest tent? If anything they provide too much water pressure coming from the brew house! A team has the opportunity to vend, and even if it's just leftover comp meat that's OK and everybody has the opportunity to go home with something in their pocket to offset their expenses.

If the demand for space, didn't exceed the space that was available there wouldn't be an essay. If you can get in, I'd do it at least once and then make up your own mind for following years. That contest has a lot of the intangibles that make it special. It's one contest that I think everybody should do once.

I only applied for the first time last year, so I don't know about anything before that. It's a friendly and well run contest, in my one year's experience of it. My cousin has a summer home in Woodstock, and we have friends in the area, or I don't know if I would have applied, but having done so I'm glad I did. (Full disclosure: Having come in 5th overall could possibly influence my judgement.)

I've never been to the Jack. I thought it was truly "invitational", ie. you don't apply, they invite you. Did I misunderstand?

Yes, you officially have to apply. Even if you have won a qualifying contest, they won't put you in the draw, unless you apply.

good luck with the contest. I had an absolute blast when I was there. The crowds and support by the folks out there is pretty amazing.

Q Haven is in...

I think Jorge summed it up best. There are so many intangibles to the event that make it different and special. I'm really pleased that we are in, and can't wait for it to get here!

Smokin' Hoggz will be there, just got the acceptance Email, it is an awesome venue!!:-D
