So after starting to get into BBQing over the summer (wife got me a smoker for fathers day/bday) I decided to enter my 1st competition on 9-22-12 this past saturday in Mariposa CA called the Blazin Hog BBQ Competition. There were 25 spots available and only 14 teams competed. In ribs we took 7th and in tri-tip we took 6th. I recognized Barts Blazin Q from Livermore and Bad S BBQ out of Sunnyvale. I met Dave from Barts and Ryan Pang from Bad S BBQ and I have to say those 2 guys are some of the friendlest, nicest guys I've met. Dave actually came over and introduce himself him to me toward the end of competition and I was in the spot next to Ryan & Bad S BBQ. It was one of the best times I had with my dad working as a team and just the overall experience of a BBQ competition was awesome. We definately have been bitten by the BBQ bug and will be back next year. Now on to the pr0n!

Here is my dad and myself right after setting up in the am

Thank you all for looking and like I said it was a blast!

Love that name for the team! Congrats on a successful first weekend out. I bet you're hooked now.
Thank you! The BBQ competition season is winding down here in CA but I am definately hooked and that only leaves me more time to practice before next year.

Excellent, especially for a first time competitor. Congrats. Oh, by the way, I think I have the same pitiful excuse for a hat, too... :)

So, were YOU happy with the results?

I was very happy with the results especially for my 1st time out and in the rib category where I was very close to Bad S BBQ/Ryan Pang and their calibur of BBQ. It was a close one!

Very cool. What's up with that hanging smoker? A rookie team at a comp in Montana was using one and I thought it was something they found or made, but now I see it's a real deal, got any info on it?

Everybody is to nice so I will bust your balls...It looks like you cut your Tri-Tip with the grain. :0
No worries...lol To tell you the truth this was my 1st time trying to cut the tri-tip and I heard to go against the grain but I couldnt tell if I was doing it right or wrong...oh well, lesson learned and will get it down before my next comp :thumb:

Looks like a great time, capped with top-ten calls on your first outing!
Dad looks like one badass hombre, I heart him.
I'd never seen a rib smoker like that before either!
Thank you Diva, father/son bonding time outweighed the results of our 1st comp but we had a blast! Check out The Orion 101 Covection Cooker, thats the name of the smoker, I love it :thumb:
