... or known as the offer I couldn't refuse.

A while back... a Brethren Brother Parrothead had a custom Klose BYC for sale... eventually another Brother (Moderator MilitantSquatter) became the new owner.

There's a significant back-story here... early last year - 2010
As my signature shows, I've gone through a few different types of cookers and enjoyed learning how to master them. After I stopped competing, I began to get a constant itch to cook on a stickburner again which was where I started and what made me love BBQ... especially so after each new thread about "old school", traditional BBQ, stickburners etc.

I recalled a For Sale thread from brother Greg (Parrothead) that was probably nine months old. He was looking to sell his pit. I figured it had to of sold but I took chance and shot him a PM anyway. To my surprise, he still had it.

After more agonizing thought, some help from Greg along with a good dose of prodding from Poobah, I committed to Greg that I would buy his custom Klose Backyard Chef !!! it's got two pullout shelves i the 20x50 main chamber, 5 pullout shelves in the vertical, 1/2" thick firebox etc..

Greg and I both have work to do to get it out of his yard up to the front of his house (not easy from what Greg tells me) and then to arrange to ship from IL to NY.

This post is more than about me though...

While I will be the proud future pitmaster of this pit, I also know it has has a lot of Brethren history (maybe much in the way that Bigdog now own's MOAB). Greg bought this pit, a while after Phil had already had his custom Klose BYC. Greg and Phil worked closely with Dave Klose to design Greg's pit to specs & mods that Phil thought would enhance what he wished he had on his BYC after getting to know it. In addition, this pit was used at several of the early Bashes that Parrothead hosted. I have looked through the Brethren Photo Gallery to find some of those pics to share here. The pit will need a little love when it arrives but Phil is like a proud papa already discussing the primer, paint, re-seasoning process we'll work on.

It will be my job to ensure this pit gets used, so Greg knows it went to a good Brethren home away from it's original Brethren home.

Thanks Greg...

Stay tuned !!!

So Vinny had Parrothead's Klose... and Phil wanted first rights if it ever became available again... since its the "improved bigger brother" of Poobah's custom Klose BYC.

Fast forward to last weekend:
Vinny was going to sell his BYC... and Phil said something along the lines "Its mine". But what will he do with (2) BYC's in the yard? Recall this is the Klose of legendary lore... the Klose BYC mentioned in the snot thread... the catalyst which ultimately led to this forum... the BBQ-Brethren.

Phil could have placed the BYC up to an auction... to the biggest offer... but he gave me an offer I couldn't refuse... a fair price for a classic stickburner. So I came down from PA with a trailer... to move not one, but two BYC's to their respective new homes.... moving Vinny's BYC to Phil's... and taking Phil's Klose back to PA.

Bob, you lucky Donkey! Congrats! That's a great smoker with a great history.

These Klose's are getting around more than Paris Hilton! :p
Great pics and story, enjoy the new pit!

Great story - now I'm going to add to it.

Since Bob was on a road trip - he dropped by to see Big Al and me. Thanks Bob - I know it wasn't exaclty on the way - it was great to get to meet you and chat for a few minutes. Hope the trip home was uneventful.

Good post Bob.

When I bought the pit from Greg, I planned to have it a long time despite my history of pit turnover (each with a reason at that point in time). Fast forward to late 2011, w/ usual weekday work & increasing general weekend stuff / family responsibilities, I just did not have the time to use it with any frequency as I would need to be home all day to feed the logs every 30+ minutes. In retrospect, it was also bigger capacity than I really needed too.

Attempted to sell it once, but quickly changed my mind... With more reflection and the winter weather approaching which would only further inhibit my potential to cook on it, I made the decision it was definitely time to sell.

At some point down the road, maybe I'll be able to go back to a stick burner again, but not in the near future. So for now, I've purchased a 22" WSM. The WSM will allow me to cook more frequently which is my main goal and be enough capacity for me. I've had 18" WSM's before so this will be an easy transition.

Glad both pits are staying w/ Brethren and are going to the best place at this time.

I love this story! Glad you had it for a while Vinnie. Even more happy that Phil has it now. I just got off the phone with him. He cooked up some chicken tonight on it and will post pics tomorrow.
