So my pit barrel cooker is arriving this afternoon... My question is, I'm planning on doing a chicken to break it in and I have some apple chunks. How many chunks for 1 whole chicken, halved?
 
One fist sized chunk is plenty. Poultry takes smoke very quick. Apple is my favorite for chicken.

I think the chicken will take about 2hrs to reach internal temp. Poultry picks up the smoke pretty easily so maybe a couple large chunks or a few smaller ? I usually don't worry and toss in a handful. I will be good !!! enjoy
 
Yeah... Chicken on the PBC isn't a long cook, so one chunk should be fine. It's better to err on the side of less smoke. you can always add more next time.
