Just be careful that the rub does not have too much, or even any, salt.

I sometines will reach for Dizzy Pig Raging River or my no-sugar/no-salt rib rub or Jim Goode's Beef rub (which calls for salt to taste, but I omit it and salt the meat if it needs it.)
No sugar/No salt rub
3 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon ground basil
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon red pepper
1 tablespoon mustard powder
Goode's Beef Rub
2 1/2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons paprika
2 teaspoons mustard powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon ground bay leaves
3/4 teaspoon ground coriander seed
3/4 teaspoon ground savory
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
3/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
salt to taste
