Several of the competitions my wife and I judge each year are 5+ hours away, simply because there aren't that many close by. We also pick two events each year to fly to.
While willingness to travel distances doesn't necessarily make for "best" judges, it does speak to dedication and is an indicator that they (we) are not just in it for a free meal. IMHO.
