Wow, what a competition! Friday night around 9pm a storm blew in with 86mph winds. One team's site was wiped out and another lost their pork and brisket as their WSM smokers were literally blown away. The competition still took place but without any electrical power at all. Thanks to Dan Hixon of 3Eyz who let the KCBS reps use his generator to power their computers to compute the results! They are not expecting to get power restored until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Congrats to all who walked and to 3Eyz for GC!

Congrats to Dan and Chris. 4th GC in 5 weeks - Awesome! The storms caused major damage across the mid-Atlantic, including Covington. Hope no one was hurt. There must have been a large canopy graveyard with those winds. It sounds as it BBQ folks were helping others where they could, as usual. Glad 3Eyz had the generator.

Congrats to all who survived it. Also to 3Eyz, nice back to back...even more impressive due to conditions, not easy to do I would imagine!

If the winds were anything like they were here in Culpeper...I cant even picture being out in them with gear! The Pop-ups would have to have been bolted to the asphalt and even at that they would have been destroyed by the wind here!
 
I think that is the true response of BBQ. We might all be in a competition but we take care of everyone around us.

Congrats to all who survived and walked. I feel so bad for the teams who got wiped out and couldn't continue.

That was a wild ride of a storm. I was with Dizzy Pig holding on to two EZUps. I looked up Main St and saw what looked like a wall of water coming right at us. But it wasn't water. It was a wall of dirt in a 80 MPH blast! We all got sandblasted. We got lucky and didn't lose any of our 3 popup canopies. People came over and asked what brand they were.

This contest may have set a record with the amount of canopies destroyed. It wasn't just the BBQ people, there were a ton of vendors setup on another street. They all pretty much got wiped out. Sad.

My favorite story from Covington will be the two girls from Damage BBQ. They came by after the storm and asked me & Chris if we had seen a piece of paper. :twitch: What? There are roof tiles, broken glass, shingles, leaves and sticks, and broken EZUps every where, the town is completely dark with no power and you're asking us if we've seen a piece of paper??!!!!! I think it was their timeline. Not sure. But they were determined to find it so they kept walking down Main Street. Chris and I just looked at each other and laughed.

Sure enough, about 30 minutes later, here they come skipping and giggling back up the street with a 8x11 piece of paper in their hand. They found it!! Talk about a needle in a haystack... One team lost parts of their WSM and never found it! My hat is off to these girls for their determination. I am impressed!! :clap2:

Thank everybody. Looks like the organizer really tried to make this a great contest. An air conditioned building for the judges, good power and lots of vendors. Nature had different plans however and that storm was as bad of not worse than the great Dover storm several years ago.

It was awesome to see teams pick up the pieces, prep their food in front of their truck lights and make due. When they asked the teams if they wanted to cancel the contest, everybody said no and wanted to continue. Pretty cool.

Great job to everybody that walked and it was awesome celebrating our 100th contest with Chris Capell of Dizzy pig who was also cooking his 100th contest.
 
Some additional notes from this weekend.
I came through on the way back to Richmond this morning. Estimates of power back by Tuesday / Wednesday?? I question with as many power poles snapped and not a single power truck in site. They have a lot of work to do to get this town back.
Drove through the contest area to show my wife and town had done a good job of cleaning up but on back side of jail a lot more trees and power lines / poles still hanging and down.
Still no gas stations I saw open. I ended up driving all the way to Lexington following contest to find gas. Even then ran out sitting in line. Then drive back to Hot Springs where my wife was.
No power except generator at The Homestead where we were staying for anniversary. Another storm rolled through last night cooling things down.
The vendor area was cleaned up but yesterday counted no less than 15 pop up frames, no tent covers destroyed in the lot.
And lastly there was a BBQ team or caterer in this same lot still this morning serving food. With no power they seemed to be the only meal in town. Wish I knew who they were cause they deserve a thanks and recognition for helping out a devastated town.
Personally I thought all the entries we judges were some of the best I have had at any event. One not so great brisket but other than that all entries were great. Hard to believe the teams were able to put what we had in front of us after what came through Friday night.
 
By the way it is Carolina BBQ Co. that is still there serving and helping the town.
