First let me say thanks to those that helped me w/ my questions about my UDS build....It's almost complete just needs a smoke stack and some handles for lifting out the coal grate so I dont have to reach down there also needs a lid handle and side handles...I'm undecided if I want to paint it or not..I may just keep it UGLY.:-D...

In the meantime I couldnt wait to try it out so I cut a temporary grill out of some expanded metal...I live an hour from town and didnt feel like making the drive..

I tried some ribs and a Tri Tip...I cooked them for 5 hrs at 225-235 I was happy to see that these things are easy to work with, I just basically checked the temp every hour.....

Anyway here's my VUDS (very ugly drum smoker)

Whoohoo! Nice looking drum and groceries too! I'd hit that. I'd keep that expando grate. It's looks awesome and unique. I say toss some paint just to keep the rust at bay and have it last longer. Nice job on the build and the cook too!:eusa_clap

Wow great looking TriTip nice smoke ring very moist looking. Ya did good great looking pron.

A few beers and the right lighting and she could look beautiful. Long as she keeps putting out I'd keep her.

Dang! It's a shame to ruin that drum with such fine lookin' scenery!
Great job! Love the grate. Food looks tasty!!

Don't paint it man! Give it the El Naturale look. An added bonus is that no one will steal it.

Thats one ugly drum! I thought mine was the ugliest. Almost. But if it turns out meat that looks like that... let her be ugly.

That Tri Tip does look tasty! How did you end up handeling it?
Who cares what the drum looks like right now...I believe I'm paraphrasing/quoting someone around here by saying the only thing that matters is how it tastes in the end!!

Nobody's stealing that thing unless they opened it up and see that 'Que. How does something so ugly produce such good looking eats.

I smoke during just about the whole cook, sometimes just to let my neighbors know what their missing!, BTW, Nice score, enjoy!

I had to go back and look at the picture, I didn't see the scenery the first time around... lol Great job on the smoker and the food. not to mention the pron.

Great looking drum, scenery and grub! Nice job!

I dont have to worry about stuff getting stolen around here...Us hillbillies have guns:wink: I might just keep it ugly anyway though..

I rubbed it w/ season salt, garlic salt and pepper and put it and the ribs on at the same time....pulled them both off at 5 hrs....The ribs were a little tough (should they have gone longer?) but the tri tip was tender and juicy... I did notice both pieces of meat were a little strong on the smoke flavor ....I used a couple chunks of Oak and I'm thinking maybe oak has a strong flavor? I do have a couple pieces of almond here that I may try next time..

Nice looking job on the meat there, I like the grate, sort of honest in a materials sort of way.
