Im building a couple of UDS this week and had a question. I ordered the drums and they are being delivered this week. One is new and one is what they called "refurbished". They say it has been burned out and is ready to be used as a smoker but I thought I would check with the brethren and see what they thought. Has anyone ever ordered a refurbished drum? Im just wondering if im going to have to burn it out again myself. Its a pain in the neck in the sububs.

I know it may be impossible to answer without seeing the barrel but i was wondering if maybe there was some sort of industry standard for "refurbished" barrels that could give me an idea of its readiness before I actually received it.

Best thing to burn out drums in the burbs is a weed burner torch that hooks to your propane tank. Use it to light coals later. One source:

I used to work in a paint factory, and there is no standard for refurbished barrels. Our refurbs came clean inside with no liner, but we had to check each one with a lightbulb lowered into it to make sure it was clean before filling it with paint.

If it's refurbed, ask them if they have a rust inhibitor sprayed in them. It's alway best to err on the side of caution.

I bought them from The Barrell Company in Las Vegas.

I paid $45 and $27 to deliver it to Reno. I know lots of others got them for free or more cheaply but I didn't want the hassel of having to burn it out and couldn't find anything new or reconditioned in the Reno area.

Im assuming rust inhibitor is good?

Thanks for the link. My guess is that rust inhibitor is a bad thing. Don't want anything in that drum unless you put it there.

I bought a reconditioned 85 gallon salvage drum and it looked brand new inside, and had a cheapo paint job on the outside. I just hit the paint until it blistered and used a palm sander and it took the paint to bare metal and repainted it with BBQ black.
