Meridian, TX, National Barbecue Championship Cookoff

Can anyone tell me about this event? Is it sanctioned? Will the 'big names' be there? Is it worth making time to go?

I just learned of it today sorta tangentially. It's within the range of a day-trip for us; so I might consider going.

It is sanctioned by the IBCA. They had close to 200 teams last year. I personally don't care for IBCA because they don't use certified judges. This doesn't seem to bother folks in TX. To each their own.

By big names, if you mean the likes of Myron Mixon, Tuffy Stone, etc., no, I sincerely doubt they will be there.

I did a little more searching. If this web page can be believed, the contest will be judged by IBCA this year.

Almost exclusively Texas cooks with some from surrounding states. Sanctioned by IBCA and following their rules, under the supervision of their Head Judges.

It will be different. Not better, not worse. Just different.
