CBJ Committee Ed Roith No Report
Education Committee Paul Kirk No Report
Philanthropy Committee Tana Shupe No Report

Why are you on the BoD?

I believe the responsibilities of any BOD extends beyond committee's. That said, I think a brief update is better than no report.

I agree Thom, there are a few members that are just on the BOD,to BE on the BOD, I think. We REALLY need new life and new blood at the KCBS,things have really taken a downturn in 2009.I hope 2010 is better .

I understand that it looks bad that they did not produce a report but is it feasible to expect a report at each meeting from these committees? Is it possible that the committee they head might not be active on a constant basis? Could it be that they didn't report because nothing was necessary or current?
Don't get me wrong I am not making excuses at all but i would hate to condemn someone for their body of work from a quick snapshot of their tenure.

Skip, KCBS' stated primary exempt purpose (directly from their tax return) is "PROMOTION AND EDUCATION OF BARBECUE AND BARBECUE COOKING"

Education is a primary reason that it is a not for profit. If there isn't activity then why not? The "why not" should be reported.

If there is no activity to report, wouldn't that jeopardize continued tax exempt status?

There should always be activity, and it should always be reported to document it, if not to keep the membership informed, then for the purpose of substantiating satisfaction its claimed purpose for exemption.

Well then it does seem a bit damning that there is no report but I wonder if education is difficult to disseminate during the height of the season when promoting the BBQ through contest and such is the main focus. I wonder if education is something held for the "off" season when the membership can better approach educating the masses.

Again this is just benefit of the doubt ideas. It could very well be that the education aspect is being completely ignored which is the fault of not only the chair of the committee but the entire board for not holding the chair to a specific expectation. If that is the case I applaud Thom for making it known to the membership here so that we can move to correct it.

I think there was a thread on committees and their activity. Maybe we can see how many no reports there were and for what committees.

Skip, here it is: http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72073

Eric had listed months with and without a report from Paul Kirk.

There were only a few reports identified.

Well not much to say there. That speaks for itself. 2 reports in 9 months at that point. Although they do come out in Feb and March which do go along with the "off-season" idea. To me.....it doesn't look like the effort being put forth is in line with the mission statement.

Skip,

While it's just my humble opinion, and I can accept the 'off-season' logic to a point, think of how many CBJ class' are held just prior to a comp (Ed Roith's reports), I would also think that this would feed into the Education Committee with regards to materials and changes to the information taught based on rule changes and clarifications. I would also think that summer would be the prime time for the Philanthropy Committee to be at it's busiest.

And yet all we seem to hear is "No Report".

Nope I do agree. I've just been burned before jumping to conclusions too early. I try to give every benefit of the doubt and let the chips fall where they may. You make three valid and hard to contest points. Education and CBJ classes do go hand in hand. Fundraising would be best in the height of the season when spectator and member co mingle at numerous events and yes the off season idea only hold so much water.

I wonder if we are upsetting the apple cart as it were. Perhaps this is normal business as usual and membership is only now taking a good hard look at what their board is doing.

It comes down to are you there to actually do something
or.......... What other reason would one want to be on the BoD?

With the issues we're up against over the next few years, including possibilities of other sanctioning bodies, we have no time to sit back and not work hard to make things right again!

Jeff has my vote 100 percent!! You want change? I strongly believe he will bring it and make a stand for us cooks and represent us well! He's a hard-worker and has the dedication from what I have seen.

This is exactly the kind of information we need posted NOW, before the election. I'd like to see some of the named board members address these questions.

While I agree wholeheartedly, good luck with that. Some of the incumbent candidates seem more interested in talking about how long they've been around in the barbecue world rather than talking about what they have done in the past and what they plan to do if elected.

It's too bad, because I fear that a lot of KCBS members will simply recognize the names of those people when they get their ballot and vote for them without knowing if they are going to do a good job representing the membership or not.
