Effort.
Yeah, to some degree it is luck, or a good photograph, or just some food that a lot of people like.
But, in the long run, I see this one trend -- the entrant that puts the most effort into a TD entry often wins, even though other entrants may post a prettier picture.
Win or lose, I try to submit entries that I've worked hard to make competitive. Sometimes it gets me a win, and many times it doesn't -- sometimes it results in zero votes, which is a reward in itself, and a weird kind of way.
Bottom line, dig deep and aim to cook something excellent. Win or lose, you will at least eat well.
