Another "what kind of wood is this?" thread..

So, I got some free wood and am not sure what I have. Sample #1 might be maple because the leaves from this tree turned red in the fall. However, as you will see in the pic, it had a little "cocklebur" type pod attached to branches with leaves.

Sample #2's owner swears it is persimmon (sp?) and had a bright orange bark when cut. Thanks in advance for any help!
