Do NOT paint it. The paint will not last more than a few months over the porcelain enamel.
You may never get the true black finish completely back. But you will still have a great grill that will last you many, many years.
I use a car polisher and Meguair's polish on my kettles, and it works very well. But, I have a black Smokey Joe Platinum that refuses to return completely to black. I live with it. It is what it is, a fantastic kind-of grey cooker.
Treat it like a fine piece of old leather or copper. Celebrate the "patina."
