KCBS rules: need some help defining this one

We just completed our 5th KCBS competition in Herman, Mo. and have to say we had a blast getting 3 walks. We have been trying to learn the rules along the way and stay "in bounds" but I am having a hard time defining what this rule actually means.
CAUSES FOR DISQUALIFICATION & EVICTION (of a team, its members and/or guests):
A. Excessive use of alcoholic beverages.
B. Serving alcoholic beverages to the general public.
A. I dont have much of a problem with that one, it's B. that I need some help on. Since our first competition I have told our friends and guests that come to see us and visit that we can not serve them alcohol from our coolers. This was really hard in Herman with the wine, Jack, Margaritas, and Fat Tire abounding. To me it just makes it hard to have a good time with them especially at events where they are not selling and won't let the general public bring it on site.

So are friends and guests to your cooking site considered "general public"? What do they really mean by that statement?
Your help, comments, and suggestions are much appreciated.

i think by serve they may mean selling to the public. Not invited guests drinking your beer for free.

Been to 2 comps now and haven't seen that enforced at all, actually seen some teams have party's with 50 people on Friday, semed like a good time was being had by all

I remember reading that rule, I remember forgetting that rule about 2 seconds after reading it. I suggest the same. Arn't your visitors really members of your team anyway? According to rule two, Each team shall consist of a chief cook and as many assistants as the chief cook deems necessary.

I think the local police would deal with someone actually selling alcohol in a Park or public place. If that's what they mean then there would be no "real" limitations.

That's what I'm looking for KC_Bobby, a LOOPHOLE. A big one.

I think the spirit of the rule is not to just give it away or sell it. I do not consider friends and family general public.

Decatur - I am from Decatur, born in St Mary's but lived most of my kid life in a country house just outside of Macon. Have a ton of family over there. DO you know any Fortners or Obriens?

Nope I don't think I know either family. Wish I did though. I have lived in the Soy City all of my life. Just now getting out and telling the rest of the World about our little town, thru BBQ.

If yo know them they are your friends not general public. This has always been my rule to follow. I have met people at some contests who instantly become my friends and no longer fall into that public category. Make sense?

yup makes sense to me but just wanted to get some feedback. Thats the way we will roll from now on.

Running out of beer for your friends... Now that is a whole different story.

It's a RULE!!! AKA DISCLAIMER. Take it for what it's worth . It would be difficult to enforce.

We are your brothers and sisters therefore we shall drink your beverages. Right?

I guess they'll have to DQ every team at the Royal this weekend. Either that or send the 115,000 spectators home without a drop. That'll go over well.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the positive notes. I can carry on and have a good time with out worrying about it anymore. I hope you all have a blast at the Royal, I will be waiting for some exciting pix and some great food porn.

Interesting question and a valid one.
However, posting to a Forum will give you a whole lot of opinions, but nothing you can "hang your hat on" when it comes to something like rules application.

I think everyone pretty well explained the situation.

But....Only the KCBS can give you a definitive answer.

It appears that Mike Lake is the Chair of the Judging committee which is the closest to a "rules" committee I can find.
mlake@kcbs.us

He can point you in the right direction, for sure.

Good question, but answers on Forums are "for entertainment value only" !

Thanks Tim, I see I have started something in another thread so we can just drop this one and let the debate carry on.
