Only competed once so far and am signed up for another competition this month.

The one I am doing this month is a "State Championship" according to the organizer. As a newbie, my question is what is the progression of competitions? Local comp wins lead to what? And what is the ultimate goal for a BBQ comp team year in and year out as far as qualifying goes?

Sorry for such an elementary question.

Many bigger comps (the Jack and the AR) require a comp to be a State Championship. This means nothing really other than the governor of the state has deemed it one. Starting for the next American Royal contests no longer have to be a state championship.

Depending on the comp it may just be a local event. Sams Club events has a local, regional and then national.

does this mean the AR is simply an open competition?

The American Royal is 2 contests - an invitational and an open.

The invitational is for teams that have won a grand championship in a sanctioned contest, generally 25 teams or more. Anyone can enter the open, which is the largest BBQ contest in the country.

The Jack Daniel's invitational is harder to get in to, as you need to be a grand champion and represent a state (either the one you won in, or your own). In states that have a lot of contests, there is a drawing to determine who can compete in The Jack.

Getting to the American Royal Invitation and The Jack are the goals of many teams.

Sam's Club uses a tier system....top 6 from 5 local contests advance to compete against 30 teams in a regional. The top 10 from each of the 5 regionals compete in a national contest in Bentonville, AK. THAT contest is held right between the AR and The Jack, making a nice little road trip for someone in all three.

Bentonville, AR. AR is for Arkansas.

AK is the abbreviation for Alaska.

AZ is for Arizona.

Sorry. Just a pet peeve of mine.
