Carolina Smokin' Fall Fling and BBQ, Lumberton, NC - November 9-10

OK--I found the web site and was able to cut and paste a date into your thread title.
Had to hunt for a location. Never sure I found that for sure.

HINT---you will get a whole lot more feedback if you list dates and locations in the title of your thread on this site

We are a National and Internatinal Forum--but, most of us are geographically challenged!

Have a great time!

TIM

Tim,

Thanks.

I am officially in. I drove down and paid my dues, and check it out. Looks like a LOT of room for a LOT of teams. It is there first one, so hopefully they will have enough to make it worth their while so they will continue to have them. It is a nice place.

If I remember right, I am team number 21...... so everyone else stay away so my odds of GC will be better.... :-D

BUMP...

The event organizer that is taking care of it now had it dumped in his lap a couple of months ago.

I finally got a confirmation that I am in.

Any body planning on coming?

It looks like I will be alone except for my wife and 15 YO this time out. If any body is in the neighborhood, and want to help out, please let me know. It is a good way to learn about a comp. I promise to go easy on ya if you want to help...

Bill, would have loved to do this one but with distance and timing, it's not gonna happen. Just winterized the coach.....it's that time of year up here already:eusa_clap

Best of luck and have a some fun!!!!!!

T,

Knowing you, you will show up anyway just to sample the food....

That is ok, hopefully we will get together sometime next year, and I can show you how it is done....   , or maybe it is more like, you can give me some pointers.....

And yes, fun is the number one objective... if you don't have fun, it ain't worth going.... if you take it too serious, it isn't fun. So go and have a good time, that is what I do, and seems like that is what I tell everyone...

Bill

Almost ready to roll. Coolers are packed, just have to throw  them in the trailer. I will stop and fill them with ice, pick up a few last minute items, and rock and roll....

Anything other than all of my music and a few dvd to watch while I stay up all night and tend the stick burner, I am ready. A last minute shower and change of clothes, and out the door.

We are hoping to be there about 1pm or thereabouts. That is when meat inspection is suppose to begin. Then get set up and relax a few minutes before we get busy getting the briskets and butts going.

There will be a nice slab of salmon later with baked potatoes and sucatosh for veggies... Enough coffee for hopefully all night and for the morning:icon_sleepy. It is suppose to be about 35 in the morning  with a high of 62 tomorrow. Once the sun pops up, it should be nice....

If I am awake when I roll in tomorrow night, I will try and post some results.

Again, if you are in the area, stop by and say hi.

Bill

Have a great time Bill and best of luck!!!

A great cook-off with a few first year bumps. Their bumps were nothing compared to the cold wind Friday night and all day Saturday. Enjoyed meeting new folks and seeing old friends!

look at the brisket category....

Smoke-N-My-I's beat Buttrub.com.....

We had a great time. Got in last night about 8:45pm... would have gotten in a little earlier, but the lights went out on the trailer and had to make an emergency repair job.

I managed to keep the temps inside our tent on Friday night about 49 degrees. Saturday was WINDY.... gail force wind advisories on the coast just a few miles away.... One tent went rolling away, several others were damaged. I tied mine to the trailer wheels and running boards on my truck. The next thing I know, the side away from the wind was being lifted up about 3 feet in the air.... Cooker temps would fluctuate any where from 89 degrees to 330 degrees in less than a minute..... I found out all the "stick" burners were having the same problem... what fun.... can't wait to do it again. So, a lot of the meats were having a hard time getting done in time.

Tonto will be proud of me... I took my first rack of ribs off, placed them on my large cutting board, reached in with my tongs to get the second rack.... and plop.... down the first one with the cutting board went right on the ground...... they were done just a little too much and fell apart... so they just laid there until I got time to pick them up and put them in the doggy box..... they loved them today.

So, needless to say, I didn't do the best, but overall I am pleased with what I got. I didn't realize I beat the Reserve Grand Champion in brisket until today.... WOW... now that makes me feel good. My chicken did lousy, but I have never really had any good scores even with what everyone else thinks is super good chicken..... what do judges know anyway???? My pork scores fell this time, and the ribs are the usual... so-so.

I will post a few pics probably tomorrow after unloading the trailer and truck. I am off and I have to smoke 2 turkeys, so I will be busy for a while in the morning.

Here is an article from the local paper there. Yours truly is a celebrity now.... I am listed right after the right up about the judge from Delaware.

So until later,

Bill

Sounds like the wind and weather conditions where a challange. Our last 2 comps were similiar....crazy winds blowing 40-50 mph. Defintley challenging for a stick burner. As far as the cold....ya'll southerners just need to thicken your blood up some:p. Your Brisket sounds like it's comimg along...alllways nice to place higher than the GC or RC in a catogory....a fellow's gotta have somthing to be proud of:wink:.

As far as the 'Rib Incident....I was standing 30ft away having a cold one with PecularMike and PigCicles...that's my story and I'm sticking to it:biggrin: That one is all on Bud, but we do laugh our butts off about it now. I'll let him tell you his version:roll:.

Looking foward to the pics!!!!

BTW...good article!

Sounds like a great time....in spite of Mother Nature

Good writeup in the paper.

Congrats on the brisket!

TIM

Theresa, I told you to bring that big 'ole wind break motor home... that would have really helped.... not... not with the wind switching directions every couple of minutes....

Tim,
thanks... you would have enjoyed it.

So here is what you all have been waiting so patiently for...

Trimming one of the briskets:

Temp inside the tent at about 2am:

Looking out from my site toward the back row of teams:

Looking from my site toward the turn in building. If you look real hard above the rides, you will see the top of a green building. That is the turn in site. We had to go to the right hand side of the building and go inside. A nice brisk 5 minute walk from our site.

Looking down the "back" row from our sight. The first one next to me was Jack's Old South BBQ.

Early morning shot before the winds started. My trailer and truck on behind the tent.

This was the 1st place ribs that ended up on the ground:

Here is what ribs look like when they are sun bathing.....

Here is what last place (32nd) chicken looks like:

28th place ribs.

29th place pork:

14th place brisket:
