Just got back for this contest....Had a great weekend.

Highlights of the weekend...

The People's Choice competition took place on Friday night. People paid $10 for a card to sample and vote KCBS style (Taste, Tenderness, Appearance) on each team. We received alot of great feedback from people, but because we were giving hefty samples out ;) we ran out of food 20 minutes early, which cost us alot of votes. Our neighbors, a local team called Bo Bo's BBQ won it.

Around 4am I was checking my smoker and noticed smoke barreling out of another competitor's cooker. After a closer look, I notice flames shooting out of his cooker door (DW Kountry Kooker style). I said "Buddy, Your cooker is on fire!" and he woke up, looked at it and then at me and said, "why do you think that?" I told him it was because of the 5 foot flames coming out of the door and he jumped up and realized that yes, he was giving all of his competition Butts and Brisket a good "sear." To his credit, he pumped them full of his injection and foiled them up, and still took 3rd or 4th in Pork category!

I also had a first hand experience with the infamous "Judge 6" this weekend. We received all "9's" on every category, except one judge on our brisket table, thought our box deserved a 6. Apparently other teams received as low as 5's on some decent boxes by what had to be the same 3 judges. My new motto is BBQ comps are like the UFC, don't leave it in the judges hands! lol

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. The Brazier's have got to be the best KCBS reps in the business. They wished us good luck on our first Pro KCBS competition multiple times over the weekend, put on a great (and funny) cooks meeting, and even walked around to every cook site and asked did anyone have any questions or would we like to verify that our garnish material was legal. All around great people!

I want to wish a congrats to all who were called and walked, and a big congrats to Danny Coogle and Pitbull's Up In Smoke on winning Grand Champion. Danny has gone above and beyond to help me out and give me tips at the last 2 competitions.

Brisket Box in Question.....

Your brisket box above looks great , to get a 6 on a box like that is unexplainable. Great job this weekend

Nice Box! We had a great time this weekend. What I wouldnt have given for the fire seared pork your neighbor had! lol

Sad for the reason we were reps there (due to the death of Carol Bigler's father), but really enjoyed this contest. Organizers were very receptive to our suggestions, especially for some tweaks for next year. Contest was a GREAT size for us to be able to visit with teams we don't see that often. Congratulations to all.

Good Job, Hogs!!!

I remember your first contest was last October in Canton and didn't you win the Backyard division?

A 7th overall in that field is a great accomplishment in this short period of time.

Yes, Phillip and Kathy are the greatest KCBS reps there are, bar none. They put on a great show and do what they can to make sure the contest organizer has their head screwed on straight also. I always want to do a contest where they are listed as the reps.

It's too late now but the table captain should have interrogated the judge who gave you that score on the brisket and I hope you got a comment card. If the judge refused to fill out a comment card on that, he should have his badge taken away.

Thanks for the nice words and the table captain did bring it to our attention and that judge was spoken to, as were a couple more first time judges throughout the contest.

Phillip

BTW, the grease fire in the insulated cooker is the new Ace in the Hole...

We did it in Cornelia last week in the Stumps and pulled a 2nd in ribs where the ribs were on fire at 8:45 am...

Everybody should try it.

Good job HGW...it was a pleasure to cook next you guys this weekend. I'll second that about a grease fire in an insulated cooker....took 2nd in brisket a Sams Club Marietta last year with a grease fire...pork tasted like grease smoke as well...I just knew we wasted our time and money...you never know what will happen in that judging tent
