Well Homey after I get your Weber and buy a drum I may be asking you some ?? about this technique. OK?

Of course. Sam picked up the Weber today and drove it off. I stood by the curb and waved good bye with a little tear trickling down my cheek...

Yeah, when you get back in town feel free to stop by. I'll show what I did with mine and what I'm planning on doing differently with my next one.

Did you see the CL listing I posted for $40 oak barrels in Wood River? May change my plans to build a UDS :mod:

Dump it out = Ashes everywhere, including all up and down your seasoned smoker walls.

Shop Vac= Risk of coals still smoldering. Which equals fire.

Be carefuls, I have done each way. if nothing else line the bottom with stron aluminum foils, then just wad it all up and throw away. I have a 9 inch pan with a lip on it that works perfect for me. $5 alt Walmart, its the little all in one Hibachi grill.

Good point about the ashes up and down the walls, i hadn't given that any consideration.
thanks jeff

I do agree with Norco. Go back to the tread. But... what I did. I had some thin SS sheet stock, flat, cut it a few in. larger than my basket. It gives good air flow, but be careful when you lift it out!

Nice. I've seen a few smokers made out of both wiskey and wine barrels. Heard good things. Have to admit I'm tempted to try to make one myself. They're just so damned pretty.

The one thing that I keep worrying about though, is the constant heat drying out the staves and causing them to shrink thus creating big gaps.

AND.. as we all know Gaps = bad. Loss of air intake control, run away temps, over use of fuel....

Still, I really like the look and love the idea.

Thanks Dave and Souther Home Boy on the tips fop keeping the temp down during lid removal.

all of you guys on face book i put a page on there for ugly drum smokers if you want to be a fan come join

Thats cool titan! I like the table you built for your drum. Nice touch!:clap2:

Sorry guys, i'm new here and haven't managed to trawl all of this epic thread yet so if this has been addressed I apologise: how important is the shape of the charcoal basket? I planned to use a slightly dished mesh (10#) that is quite sturdy and made of stainless. Is this likely to cause me any problems? I was gonna use it as this is a basic as can be UDS build from whatever I can lay my hands on.

Got drum, solid top though, and tonight picked up a Weber 22" that I found on CL. Gradually getting the parts together to start the build!

Probably asked, so forgive me, but since my drum is a solid top, how is the best way to cut the top out, so the Weber lid will fit the best?

Tks in advance!

deadanddripping, my charcoal basket is square and my UDS makes some great que. I think the most important things are capacity and air flow. If both of those are good, the shape doesn't matter.

I'd check the fit first...my drum was a closed top, all I had to do was grind the top ring down some for a snug fit. The top ring on a open top drum is massive compared to a closed top.

I used a recip saw with a metal blade and just ran it along the inside diameter of the head. I got a little impatient in a couple of spots, so there were a few irregularities, but a hammer knocked those down quick enough and a quick hit with a grinder made sure there were no sharp edges.

For the lid, I flattened out the lip on a Weber dome, positioned it on top of the drum and carefully re-lipped it to fit the drum. Now, it's so tight it almost "snaps" into place like a tupperware lid.
