Smoke on the Water is trying to finalize our 2011 schedule. We've been working on a big contest and Rib Festival in Vegas at one of the casino properties third weekend in May. Prize money is guaranteed $150,000. Payout through 70 places. $500 flat entry fee with electricity and water. $45 hotel room rates if needed. Entry fee includes $250 in casino value with match play, buffets, show tickets and more. They are wanting teams to come in on Friday, competition would be Saturday and Sunday. I'm just polling interested teams to get feed back if this is an event that would be well attended. All we have to do is sign the contract and announce it officially.

Note that makes three KCBS Cook Offs for Nevada in May
Laughlin, Vegas and Boulder City

Hmmm...not a big gambling kinda guy...can I take a $250.00 discount on the entry fee to help pay for gas... Not sure what our PNWBA schedule looks like yet...but if those dates are open we will consider making the trip.

did ron give a date on this???could get interesting with sams club contests, problum is no dates put out there yet

Something else I realized after I quoted that....third weekend makes it a week after MIM, which is itself a week after Run for the Ribs in Louisville. Sounds like May might be a very busy month for some.

third wkend is also tennitive wknd of great american bbq and inventational,,,,,,GABin missouri

Is the GAB Invitational even going to happen? I've not seen anything on it year and there were rumors that it may be cut.

Whiskey Bent BBQ is interested

Look at this way:

Two events in one weekend: You only have to travel once and you don't have to unload / reload twice.

1. The payouts are about 15-30x the biggest payouts of most events. At night you get to say cool stuff like..."Do you know who I am? I just took 14th place brisket in the bbq event this morning...hit me. I know I have 20...hit it again" And you could still leave with some money.
2. This could be a rare event where you will see all of the sanctioning bodies represented. What better place to meet each other in person than a Clay Aiken Magic Show.
3. Supporting events like this will bring more events like this. Wouldn't it be nice to give up on that 9-5 and chase bbq full time. People like Ron Cates are starting that type of possibility. This guy is going to get a million dollars in purse out there before too long (in a calendar year). Thats the circuit to chase.
4. It's VEGAS! If you don't gamble...take the little lady out to dance with the Kardashian sisters. I bet you that I can get you to gamble by the end of the day...$5 says so?
5. Top 70 payouts...A little too long for my liking, but I understand that he is trying to soften the costs for as many as possible. Truly a promoter that is trying to understand the concerns of most teams. He doesn't want this to cost anybody an arm and a leg. You gotta fire it up for that reason alone.
6. You can go to Harrah's...light up a Virginia Slim, put on some lizard skin boots and a cowboy hat, and play old Vegas style poker with some of the guys on this forum. Sold.

Send the application.

You know what...I'm willing to pay $50 for the penthouse suite with the bowling ball lanes, Mike Tyson punching me out, a tiger in the bathroom, finding a baby, and getting married to my wife again...love you boo.

Ron Cates is a saint!

Whatever happens in Vegas will be documented on this site! Perfect!

I thought I was sold on this before. This is going to be my highlight for the year

I'm not counting it out...but if I leave the rv home and take the Yukon & smoker I'll still have $1,200 in fuel.:tsk: It would be a hellova roadtrip though.:thumb: Might happen ya never know.

Thoughts

I've always wondered...

I send food from Florida to Ohio and vice versa for about $150 a pallet (refrigerated & frozen). I can send dry foods for about $75 a pallet through some LTL's (less than load) transport companies. I bet with some careful planning and possibly a drop spot at the site...that was secured, people could ship their stuff out there for under $200.

Pallet can hold about 1200 lbs...so if you have a couple of tables, chairs, coolers, smaller smokers, supplies, tents, etc. You could probably get it all on 1-2 pallets. It might take 3-10 days, but could be more affordable and a lot less driving.

$150 to ship
$150 to send back
$300 flight

No driving...priceless!

Anybody ever attempt this?
Any transport folk out there reading this, come back one time?

Memphis in May IS the third weekend in May...12th-15th...or are we not counting Sunday May 1st as the first weekend?

You'r right...to a point. Music Fest is always the first weekend in May, and it is two weeks before BBQ Fest, however Derby day is the first "Saturday" in may. Usually the same weekend as music fest, but not this year. Run for the Ribs is Derby Day.....So it really depends. Is this a Fri-Sat event, and if so does May 1 count as a weekend? I honestly have no clue. Some one should ask Ron.

dmp

Oh yeah, and when is Freak Engine this year? the weekend of Derby Day? :)

based on the other NV KCBS dates it looks like the third full weekend in May
