I just finished a weldless version myself. I used wire to attach the expanded steel to the weber charcoal grate. I also used the wire to attach both ends of the expanded metal together. Norco mentions this technique at the end of this post:

My wire was galvanized so I torched it with the weed burner to burn off the nasties.
Can't post any pictures right now as I am seasoning, however, once it is done I will post pictures of the basket and my new UDS!
