Thanks Waterloo. Didn't even occur to me to try home electrolysis. I removed the rust the old-fashioned way, with wire brushes, knives, files and a few skinned knuckles. A few curses too. Wish I'd seen the
Rust Removal Using Electrolysis writeup before I painted all the other rusty bits.
