Here's my go to all purpose rub, it's pretty versatile and isn't overly sweet. I'm like you, I'm not really fond of candy-stick BBQ either! I usually make my own chili powder by smoking and drying poblano peppers on the pit and then grinding them in a coffee grinder, it really puts a nice zip into the rub and a different flavor than all the others out there! This recipe makes about 1/2 cup of rub. Good luck! 3 tablespoon coarsely ground black pepper
2 tablespoons table salt
1 tablespoon granulated white sugar
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons mustard powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons chili or ancho powder
1 teaspoon chipotle or cayenne powder
