From my experience I think it can.. Last year I had the factory gasket on the bottom of main part of cooker and BGE felt on top of ash pan. Sometimes my cooks would go in streaks 3-4 great low and slow cooks pegging temp.. Than I may have 2-3 in a row that it wanted to creep.. I than noticed it was when I was dumping ash and I would have to assume the seal between the two gaskets when put on determined it..
I smoked my factory lower gasket this winter and BGE felt through stupidity.. Replaced both with Nomex and this thing has been rock solid.. Seeings that it has been rock solid I have been using a shop vac from the top to clean up the ash without removing the ashpan.. Their has been zero variability in my ability to control temps cook to cook..
