I set mine up with the ring of fire as pictured. I take a straightened out coat hanger once my temp gets up and stick it through the bottom of one of the vents and close the vent until it hits. This leaves just enough air for it to settle for low and slow. Saw this tip here on the forum and it works well for the kettles. You barely want the bottom vents open because you are opening all three vent on a kettle at once so it's getting plenty of air.
