No you're right its tricky learning how to control the fire on the sjg and smokey joe platinum. It's most likely not your charcoal. Here's what has been working for me in the sjp which is just a little bigger version of the sjg which you have. I bank the coals to the vent side and leave the vent fully open as well as the other vent completely open. This seems to keep the coals burning without dying out.
