This is how the local's in Hawaii make it...
1 cup soy sauce(Kikkoman is best)
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon grated ginger, very fine
1 large garlic clove, minced
Optional corn syrup to thicken

Mix all together over low heat. Very simple
