Doesn't sound like a terrible deal for the Char-Griller. My neighbor bought one to try to keep up with me () and he loves the combo. He doesn't have the side box but loves using both Gas and Charcoal to cook for his family. For $125 it wouldn't be a bad purchase, given that you have enough space for it. As for using it as a stick burner, I wouldn't. I would stick to charcoal since that is what its designed for. You could try burning majority charcoal with a split of wood on top but I wouldn't do straight wood.
