I have one 5/8" and one 3/4" hole in a slider configuration (the holes are 1.5" apart).
Those holes remain wide open at first. For the rest of the cook, both holes are closed down to b/w 1/4 - 3/4 of their full size. I am still amazed at how little open hole area you need to run a UDS.
My original plan was to put another 3/4" hole on the opposite side. I might still need to do that to if I want to get well above 300°, but there's no need yet as it runs anywhere I choose between 225° and 280°.
