I believe from my experience that its not the lid its the fit. The magic to a UDS is air flow control. The lid you used must leak a lot more than the old one.
Look under neith for any gaps, does the lid slide side to side? Is it sung but still gaps? Prolly a bent lid.

A very quick way to fix it is to take aluminum foil and lay all over the rim. Then push your lid down, The foil will fill in the gaps.

A way to permanently fix your lid is lay shop rags all around the perimeter of the drum rim a couple layers thick.

Then take a soft face heavy mallet and pound the lid onto the drum. The rags will cause the lid to swell and bend naturally over your drum, making a perfect fit.
