It does seem that whatever moisture might have been here in the past is long gone. Probably eaten up by whatever mold grew around. That would explain some of the stuff that has flaked off below...pretty eerie looking. I'm not sure what ate the mold exactly...or if all that scaly stuff is just dead mold.
Maybe if I just get it fired up really good it will burn all the yucky off?
