One of the things NY has going for it is the cold. A lot of the really nasty critters are native to the tropics (there are exceptions) so have difficulty establishing where the winters are cold.
BTW if you are vacationing anywhere and see a "NO SWIMMING HERE" sign, there may be a VERY good reason... :)
