Loved your post! Actually, copepods aren't harmless. They represent important life stages of some REALLY nasty parasites. As regards people drinking them. In general you are correct, but the filtering is a really good idea. More importantly, it has been found that NY drinking water is frequently infested with giardia and cryptosporidia, (self limiting protozoans that cause 'traveller's diarrhea'.) and filtering will take care of these. Giardia is becoming resistant to even chlorinated water and there are cases of infection from swimming pools.
