Here are some pics of mine.
I think part of it depends on the charcoal basket. I use the same type I have in my UDS but have the grate a bit off center (can measure if you really need me to) so that I can make the charcoal grate closer then 6" or farther then 6" from cooking grate depending on what I am cooking. I measured the distance on a Weber kettle and went from there.

As you see I have a pan that just fits inside the drum (made from a donor lid) with a ash pan so I don't know how the fire would react if the bottom intakes are used and the ash is allowed to fall to the bottom of the drum. I would be interested to know how it would work. Clean up is easy with the method I came up with.
