I thought i would share some pics grillin on an old restored fire pit in my back yard my house is pretty old i wonder how old the pit is.

I'm not sure, but; I think that was actually an "Incinerator."
When I was a kid back in the 1960's here in Denver, Colorado; every house had one of those in the back yard. It was for burning paper, and other trash. Then one day a Law was passed (I think) making them illegal to use anymore; all trash had to go to the Dump. Or; it really could be a real cooking pit someone made there many years ago. Either way it looks like it works great for doing some wicked Q. |
My First house in the high woods of RI was originally a 2 room hunting cabin with a fireplace in the house that was open on 2 sides (Kitchen - livening room) Out in the back was a fire pit shaped like yours, but made from round field stone, it did have steel studs sticking out inside the fire area. I had a cooking grid made that resembles yours. One time when I lit the wood to cook, a huge black snake came out of the chimney, scare the liveing hell out of me.we did have some good cooks out there..

While that one does look a lot like an old incinerator foundation, I have seen some old WPA wood ovens and pits that looked like that. It was not unusual to build them so that the draft from the chimney pulled air in over the coals.
