Breaking in the New UDS w/Pron

I must start off giving thanks to all the wonderful knowledge in this forum and all the great ideas for the UDS. This has been the first chance I have had to post since I finished the build earlier this past week. I was lucky enough that the wife was able to bring home a food grade drum from work that had palm oil in it!!

Starting the welding of the fire basket

All welded

Forgot to get a pic after the 3 inch legs were welded on :tsk:!!

1" ball valve and 2 3/4" nipples with caps threaded on

The Bid Belly Mod Added

Fired up the weed burner and burned the zink coating off of the bolts

Next post the seasoning!!!

rifraf 04-08-2013 12:54 AM

Started seasoning with a few cheap cans of EVOO Cooking Spray

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...pse1b143d5.jpg

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9880ccaf.jpg

All coated and loaded with 16 lbs of KB

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...psb66f0992.jpg

Weed Burner Fire Starter

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8e9c62ed.jpg

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7c322f0c.jpg

Cranked it up to 400* nice clean smoke with only the ball valve open

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...psce6c1c7e.jpg

After 4 Hours @ 400*

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...psf4ff108b.jpg

Threw on a couple naked fatties one hot and one mild!!

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps842dd205.jpg

After 2.5 hours @250* time to rest cant hardly wait!!

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4a89cc9e.jpg

The only shot i could get before the were devoured

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...psc193da5e.jpg

I cranked it back up to 400* and let the rest of the charcoal burn off for the rest of night. It ended up burning for over 15 hours from start till the temp started dipping below 200.

I'm overly joyed with the performance and the ease of use with the my new smoker!!!!

Looks delicious!

Can you tell me (link) what you used for the probe grommet?

J-Rod 04-08-2013 10:26 AM

Congrats on the UDS- they're great cookers! Food all looks awesome too. Only thing I'd add is a handle on the lid and a 6" stack on the large bung. I think it helps fight the wind on those not-so-optimum BBQ days. Looks like you're off to a great start though!

I used one of these a 1/2-in NM/SE Connector

http://www.lowes.com/pd_45744-15527-...nduit+fittings

also will need a 1/2" conduit nut to secure it to the drum wall.

I used a uni bit to drill the hole.

Yeah I have a handle just trying to figure out if i want a lid hanger or not. If I install the hanger i want to use the same mounting holes as the handle. Also just got the bottle opener for it too!! :biggrin1:

Cool! A bottle opener is essential! A lid hanger is nice to have- you might be able to use the small bung hole to mount a J-hook on the underside with a bolt and a couple fender washers.

That could be a possibility. Also a 22.5 Weber grill just popped up on CL. It has been neglected but if he takes my $30 might have some other mods in the near future!!! :clap2:

Yeah made quick work for saucing and serving. Of course they only lasted 5 mins. Wish i had some more room on the grate to cook more. :becky:
