Well due to circumstances beyond my control, I finally got the time to burn out the barrel for my UDS.

My digital pyrometer was reading --- on the outside of the barrel. The hottest reading I got was 768*. I guess it wont read any higher. The rest of my build can be seen at

Nice burn.

where did you get the hinges from? Great looking lid you have there.

pitbossJB 10-15-2012 10:17 AM

Drunk Monkey,

I made the hinges myself. There are some detailed pictures in the link to my build in the first post.

IR thermo's can be a bit weird, if you dig into it there is a wide variance in something they call "surface emissivity" that explains why we sometimes get readings that are not correct.

pitbossJB 10-15-2012 11:04 AM

Hmmm Well that explains a lot. I've always wondered why I had obvious temp differences between what I thought I should read and what I was reading.

If you were taking the temp of a black surface, your readings should be pretty accurate.

pitbossJB 10-15-2012 03:41 PM

Yeah, I think most of the temps were accurate, I think they were mostly hotter than my gun would register.
