Review(pics) of 2 inch fire ring for large BGE
I saw this in the BGE catalog and decided that before the next time I BBQ a turkey I will get one. So I did. If you have ever tried to stand up a turkey in your Big Green Egg you know of the clearance problems. The turkey tries to escape out the top and you end up just laying it down as usual. Of course laying it down doesn't give you that special pit master feeling. ;)

It replaces the 4 inch fire ring that comes with the Egg and gives you 2 inches extra clearance. It is made out of the same material as the original fire ring/BGE. The price at BBQs Galore is $69.99.

2 inches for $70? totally worth it.

Here are some pics of it with today's Mr. turkey. The stoneware you see in the last pic is also sitting on the BGE little green feet.

This is how we do it here. Just propped up on my homemade 'beer can" style cooker.
We like cooking turkey here on a HOT "smoke roast". Starting at 0°, we place it in the cooker with lots of lump and smoke wood (we prefer apple for turkey) and ramp to 375° (takes 20 minutes).... then hold for a total time equal to 11 minutes per pound. Works every time! Sitting over a 16" deep dish pizza pan, we place the neck and "parts" in there with herbs, carrots, celery, onions, bay leaves..... and the turkey drips into the pan the whole time. The drippings make for amazing gravy goodness.

Cool fire ring. When I do turkeys in the egg standing up, I have just taken the fire ring out entirely. I have been able to get by on just the fuel in the firebox for the cook. A side benefit is you will have a nice raised grid with both fire rings in at the same time.
