I found another comp with a backyard division that will be held May 5. I am thinking about doing it as my second comp (my first will be this weekend) before I decide if I want to jump into the big leagues!!

As I was filling out the application I noticed the setup time begins at 5 AM Saturday morning and the turn in times are the usual 11, 12, and 1 (no brisket in the backyard division).

I'm thinking that has to be a mistake. I called the guy in charge and he said that is the correct setup time. I told him that wouldn't give me enough time to cook and his reply was "well everyone else gets their food cooked and turned in time."

I don't understand... can anyone fill me in on this one?

After me acting stupid for a few minutes the guy did finally say he would allow me to set up with the FBA competitors on Friday night.

The backyard contests are usually grilling contests. Grilling is cooking quickly under high heat. There is usually nothing in a grilling contest that takes too long to cook. There is usually no smoker needed, only a grill.

What are the entries?

I do two contests each year that are one day events just like you described. The entry times are pushed back a bit for brisket, but no pork butts.

Chicken & Ribs can be done in that time frame.

Butts

I don't know how you could do a butt right in that amount of time...

It can be done, but most people don't do them that fast and hot. I've seen briskets at one day comps, but never pork butt. Crazy.
