I would be using indirect heat from the center and placing the meat on the ends. I would also be using only logs for my heat source. Starting them in my patio fire place then transfering them as needed...

and them moving the heat source as needed...

Spent 6 hours yesterday mocking up a little, check that, big pit project for myself. I used quite a few of your ideas Razr. I really digg that counter weight idea. Now I just have to convince wifey to let me use a sizable portion of our tiny backyard. Or I could just do it while she's away...
